Description

During the period 1955 to 1975 Helwan and its nearby surroundings had developed into a first-order industrial centre with all the negative side effects involved, such as an explosive growth of population (which quadrupled in 20 years), traffic and transport problems and, particularly, significant negative effects on the environment.

It had thus become vitally important to protect the Nile River against pollution since this river provides the water supply for the densely populated areas downstream of Helwan, including the 10 million inhabitants of Cairo, to the North of Helwan.

The masterplan included the collection of climatological data as well as geological and hydrogeological investigations.

Population statistics were evaluated and investigations on the expected population growth carried out. Water supply conditions were also studied. Existing sewers and treatment plants were examined and land-use plans up to the year 2000 were established. An extensive measuring programme was carried out to determine the quantity and quality of the industrial sewage.

Having taken into consideration the effluent properties and the possibilities of disposal without endangering public health or that of animals or plants, a rehabilitation and development strategy for the sanitation system was developed.

Criteria were defined for the subsequent preliminary and detailed design of the sewer system and treatment works, providing for 1.5 million population equivalents.

In one of the numerous subsequent contract awards update of the masterplan featuring development planning as a basis for wastewater disposal engineering; forecasts of demographic and employment trends from 1993 to 2015; location studies and capacity calculations; and physical planning for additional industrial and residential areas.

As part of a further contract the hydrological and hydraulic design of the buffer pond heading up the 50 km long El Saff canal was carried out, followed by construction supervision.

WWTP extension

Since 2006 Dorsch Consult Wasser und Umwelt GmbH has been entrusted with the extension of the Helwan Wastewater Treatment Plant, from a population equivalent of 1 million to 3.7 millions and a daily flow of 550,000 m3/d.

The plant provides nitrified activated sludge biological treatment. The project includes incorporation of new treatment units and renovation of the existing units.

Due to limitations of space, the design has consid- ered various options for a new sludge treatment and disposal strategy.
