Bangkok: Village Development Programme - Irrigation Component
The project, grant-aided by the Federal German Government, forms part of a major resettlement programme for 110 000 peoples along the entire border with Cambodia.
The irrigation component concerns six individual projects with a combined net command area of 2 200 ha.
The primary crop is rice, which will be provided with supplementary irrigation during the rainy season.
During the dry season the water stored in the reservoir will permit the irrigation of vegetables and field crops over 20% of the command area.
The reservoirs will also be used for fisheries, livestock watering and recreation.
The purposed works include the construction of earth dams of up to 10 m in height, spillways, outlet works, lined concrete canals, hydraulic control structures, highway crossings and drainage structures.
In some cases it was possible to incorporate existing structures into the design.
The projects provide for the conveyance of water up to the service units (10 ha net size).
This will enable the beneficiaries, who are entirely dependent on subsistence farming, to secure their rice crops by flood irrigation.
Where better local water management is required, particularly during the dry season, the farmers will be able to construct their own on-farm distribution systems under the guidance of the executing agency.
